This Environmental Program Supervisor I position will oversee the DWM UST Washington Regional Office and programs related to the UST Corrective Action Branch as the region’s senior technical advisor for petroleum and hazardous substance USTs and petroleum non-UST issues.
The regional supervisor must possess the technical knowledge of each of the staff positions to be able to provide both internal and external technical assistance.
Work is performed under minimal direct supervision and oversight by the Branch Head and/or Section Chief.
The employee works directly with regional office staff regarding workload allocation, training, project management, and enforcement initiatives to address compliance problems.
Key Responsibilities: Serves as the Washington Regional Office Senior technical advisor for petroleum UST and non-UST issues and make independent decisions for regional program implementation.
Supervises, assists and coaches six staff positions to include staff development and training and provides consistent application of the UST Section statute, rules, and policies.
Interview and recommend candidates for hiring new staff.
Establish effective working relationships with the Trust Fund and the Permits and Inspections Branches, other Sections within the Division of Waste Management and within DEQ.
Serve as the first level of informal appeal in cases where the responsible party, consultant or public disagree with decisions made by regional staff.
The Division of Waste Management: The primary purpose of the Division of Waste Management is to protect the public health and environment through assuring that solid and hazardous wastes and underground storage tanks are managed properly, and existing contamination is cleaned up across the State of North Carolina.
This is accomplished through the Hazardous Waste, Solid Waste, Superfund, Underground Storage Tank, and the Brownfields Sections.

Bachelor's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of progressive experience in environmental work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
